There are not many surprises here, are there? There are a lot of things I like (like that Happy-Go-Lucky and In Bruges got nominations and that The Dark Knight is featured and Robert Downey Jr’s nomination).

There’s a curious lack of Clint Eastwood (has the Academy finally realised that boredom does not equal art?) and I’m honestly wondering about Waltz with Bashir in the best foreign movie category and not in the best documentary.

But basically, what this tells us is that the films not to be missed are The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Doubt, Frost/Nixon, Slumdog Millionaire, The Reader, Wall-E, The Dark Knight.

Oh, and take that suckers, Austria is nominated AGAIN. :)

  1. I’m particularly happy about Downey’s nomination but sadly, he’s up against Ledger. They don’t have two prizes for a category, do they? *Sigh*

Pitt or Langella should get best actor. Hathaway should get best actress. Wall-E should get best animated feature. Apart from those, I’m neutral :-) I just hope Slumdog doesn’t get anything. It wasn’t worth it. Well, maybe the music but nothing else.

And you guys speak what in Austria? German?

  2. Yeah, I’m pretty sure that Ledger will get the supporting actor. But it’s definitely cool that Downey’s up, too.

I haven’t seen any of the best actor movies yet and neither for the best actresses, so I can’t really say. Wall-E definitely should get it, and I’m pretty sure, it will.
Interesting – you didn’t like Slumdog? I think you’re the first person I know who says that… :)

Yep, we speak German over here.

  3. I note the conspicuous lack of anything for Baz Luhrman’s “Australia” apart from costumes… Apparently hype isn’t everything!

Actually I didn’t think that the costumes for that film were anything particularly special… ??

  4. That’s probably because Australia sucked. At least for a Baz Luhrmann movie.

But costumes… well, I’ve read women gushing about Nicole Kidman’s clothes, saying that they will inspire a new trend and blablabla.

If Oscar nomination, I would have gone for Cinematography.
