[Do I get my mind out of the gutter for this question? Hmmm…]
Discovery: I can get excited about pretty much anything new: a new blossom on one of my flowers, a new technical gadget, a release date for a book or a film, … But I also like rediscovering things.
As for the dirty stuff… wouldn’t you like to know?

15. Do you want to cut your hair?

Yes, desperately, actually. I’m very annoyed with it at the moment and now that summer’s coming, every millimeter makes a difference when it comes to heat. As soon as we are finished shooting our webseries and I’m not acting anymore, it will be cut off. Real short.

16. Are you over the age of 25?

Yes, since March 25th.

19. Do you know anyone named Steven?

I know a couple of Stefans, but not Steven.

20. Do you make up your own words?

Sometimes. Though it’s really my sister who’s the specialist there. [What she does frequently is create portmanteaus without noticing. So, Vin Diesel, for example, became Vinsel, which is especially brilliant because the almost homophone “winseln” in German means “whimper.]

No. Not at all. I’m sometimes surprised at how much I’m not jealous.

I’m not sure yet. Maybe the supermarket.

30. What was the last thing you ate?

31. Will you get married in the future?

Probably not. I don’t attach a lot of meaning to the institution of marriage per se. But if one day a future boyfriend really wanted to get married [and proposed well], I’d probably do it for him.

32. What’s the best movie you’ve seen in the past 2 weeks?

Howl. (Though The Illusionist comes a close second.)

33. Is there anyone you like right now?

34. When was the last time you did the dishes?

I have a dishwasher. I tend not to do dishes at all if I can help it.

35. Are you currently depressed?

No. In fact, moving to the new wonderful appartment not only meant that I now have a dishwasher, but also made for the first winter in my adult life that I did not get a winter depression. Yay to light!

36. Did you cry today?

37. Why did you answer and post this?

Because I always do something like this on Monday. Because I like these things. Because I couldn’t find a better meme.

9 Questions – Meme Monday

[taken from here]

1. What celebrity do you think is the MOST foolish?

I manage to stay away a lot from celebrity culture. I don’t really care about it. But one very foolish person I get bombarded with (because he’s often a topic at work) is Richard Lugner, an Austrian building company owner who is mostly famous for being famous and stupid.

2. What are 5 things you don’t care about?

[It is suprisingly hard to think about things you don’t care about… If you don’t care about them, they tend to not be on your mind after all. That, and I’m just such a caring person. ;) Therefore I shortened this to 3 things from five.]

Celebrity culture. :)
Clothes. [As long as they’re clean, I’ll wear almost anything. I care even less about what other people are wearing.]
Grades. [Never did care about them. As long as I passed…]

3. What ‘issue’ do you think your opinion is so right about that you end up trying to sway others to your point of view?

I’m not much of a conscious swayer. But I’ll gladly debate things and if I change a mind in the process, I won’t mind. Especially when it comes to issues of tolerance or gender politics.

4. What personality do you like to listen to on the radio?

I don’t really listen to talk radio.

5. What culture are you fascinated by?

Practically any culture or subculture. You could learn so much about everything, it really is fascinating.

6. You are alone with your lover’s diary. What do you do?

Nothing. Reading another person’s diary is seriously not ok.

7. What frustrates you?

Not having enough time to do everything I want to do.

8. Do you remember the first time you were on the internet? What did you do first?

I think the first time I really went on the internet was together with die andere lena and we went to a chatroom she already knew. It was all very exciting stuff.

9. What was the biggest fight you have ever had with someone?

I’m not a big fighter. But when I was a kid, I used to fight with my brother a lot. Once I even got so angry, I told him and my mom that I wished he’d never been adopted. It was the first and last time that my mom ever slapped me. [And I honestly don’t regret my brother being adopted. I love him. He’s my brother.]

Book Meme – Meme Monday

[taken from here]

1. What new book coming out soon do you plan to buy?

There are so many books that just came out that I have/had to read right away (The Heroes, One of Our Thursdays Is Missing, the paperback of Solar, The Wise Man’s Fear), but as usual there are things still on my list: Embassytown, A Dance With Dragons, Kiss of Snow, …

2. What upcoming book are you dying to read?

Well, that’s basically the same question, isn’t it? I won’t go ahead and buy books that I don’t plan to read.

3. What series is a must read for you?

The aforementioned: The Psy-Changeling Series, The Thursday Next Books, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Kingkiller Chronicles (if, as promised, book 2 gets a grip on its women) [does a trilogy qualify as a series?]. But I’m constantly looking for more, so if you have any recommendations…

4. What new author have you found so far in 2011?

2011 so far has brought me classics and old favorites. The two authors I didn’t know before didn’t really blow me away.

5. What little known author are you a fan of?

Maybe Max Goldt? He should be much bigger than he actually is…

TV Meme – Meme Monday

[taken from liberrydwarf who beat me to a TV themed meme by a week. :) But by then I had already scheduled the other meme, so you’re getting this one now]

1. Earliest remembered television?

There are the Barbapapas. That was pretty early and I only got a rather hazy memory of them.

2. TV series you would want on a desert island.

Doctor Who? Old and new – because then I’d have really have a lot to watch.

3. TV that made you laugh.

Community always does it. But there’s loads more.

4. TV that made you cry.

I really do cry easily, so there are quite a few shows on that list. But I never cried as hard during a TV show than during the episode in Buffy where her mother dies. Holy freaking crap.

5. TV crap that you enjoy.

I love crappy shows – but they have to be the right kind of crappy. Right now that’s mostly The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars and Spartacus.

6. TV you’ll never forget.

Going outside the TV shows for once, I will never forget the first time I saw the 9/11 footage. Which sounds all kinds of cheesy, but is actually true.

7. Favourite TV adaptation.

Liberrydwarf’s answer (Colin Firth-Pride and Prejudice) is pretty good and I do love me some Austen adaptations. But I think that Lost in Austen is my favorite.

8. Favourite nerdish program.

Between IT Crowd, The Big Bang Theory, Community and pretty much everything even remotely connected to SciFi and Fantasy, there’s little that’s not nerdy and on my to-watch-list.

9. One TV program you are currently watching.

Okay, I answered this extensively last week here.

10. One TV show/series you have been meaning to watch.

One show I mean to watch and didn’t mention last week is Jericho.

TV Shows – Meme Monday

It’s been a while since I wrote about TV shows that I currently watch and so I thought I’d give myself the meme:

What TV shows do you currently watch?

Older Shows That I’m Finally Getting Around to Watching

West Wing. At the beginning of Season 6, still unsure whether I want to proceed. As long as I’m unsure, I guess I will go on watching but at a really slow pace.

Firefly. I have a really bad conscience about this one because I’m supposed to write about it, too, and I can’t seem to get around to either watch the last four episodes or write about them. It’s kinda embarrassing, more than a little ridiculous but I still blame my time table.

Coming Up in this category:

– Recently talked with Co-Workers about Beauty and the Beast, saw that it was partly written by George R. R. Martin and decided that I had to give it a try.

– I still got a lot of animes on my plate, most notably Fullmetal Alchemist and Avatar: The Last Airbender (yes, still. Too many projects, too little time).

– And still more: Lexx. Jericho. Prison Break. Hex.

Guilty Pleasure Shows

Pretty Little Liars. It’s so good that I’m not even reading the books it’s based on because I don’t want to spoil the show. It’s awesomely brilliant, intelligent trash.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Finished Gods of the Arena and am just getting started with this one. So much gratuitous sex and violence almost makes it impossible for this show to be actually any good, but oh, it is.

The Vampire Diaries. Okay, this show is bad. But it’s also wonderful.

Shows That Are Really, Really Awesome

Castle. Intelligent, funny, Nathan Fillion… though I have to admit that I’m growing impatient with the will-they-won’t-they plotline. Decide already, will ya?

Community. Pure and utter brilliance.

The Good Wife. From their Social Network riff to Alan Cumming the show is made of win. Also, they manage to not annoy me with the will-they-won’t-they thingy.

The Big Bang Theory. Sheldon, I love you.

How I Met Your Mother. Every time I think that the concept is growing old or that the jokes are getting a little tired, they come up with something else that pulls me right back in. Snow problem.

White Collar. Though I have to admit that I’m growing a little disenchanted by it.

Fringe. I’m getting more and more intrigued. Which probably means that they’ll cancel it soon.

Shows That I Continue to Watch Though I Don’t Really Know Why

House. House is annoying, the concept is really old and I’m watching mostly because of a sense of duty. Which is stupid. But every time I get this close to quitting, they play an extraordinary epsiode (like last week’s) and I’m pulled back in.

Glee. I wish I could have a 10-minute Best Of of every episode. It would include Sue Sylvester, Coach Beiste, Mike Chang dancing and a few Kurt scenes. Everything else bugs the hell out of me and I feel that the scales are tipping more and more in the won’t watch direction.

Portlandia. The first episode was completely brilliant but ever since it’s been steadily declining.

30 Rock. I honestly don’t know why I continue watching, since every second episode offends me deeply. The others only offend me a little bit.

Everything Else

Harry’s Law. It’s nice, but not great.

Mr Sunshine. Has the potential to become really good, but so far, it’s not.

Current Shows That I’ve Been Meaning to Start Watching

Boardwalk Empire. Mad Men. Breaking Bad. Supernatural [I’ve decided to give it another try]. NCIS and NCIS: LA. In Treatment [stopped in the middle of the first season. Don’t know why].

Currently On Break, But Awaited

The Closer. Eureka. Warehouse 13. The IT Crowd. Haven. Leverage. True Blood. Doctor Who. Torchwood. The Sarah Jane Chronicles. Lie to Me. Memphis Beat. Sherlock. Nurse Jackie. Episodes.

Looking Forward To

Game of Thrones. Of course.

I See Dead People – Meme Monday

[taken from here] (I’ve taken the title from the original post. I’m not sure why it’s called that, though.)

1. You can travel anywhere in the world; one destination per day from Friday through Monday. Where do you go and why?

Realistic version:
Friday: Edinburgh
Saturday: Glasgow
Sunday: Inverness
Monday: cruising around the Highlands

Because I loved Edinburgh and Glasgow and I missed out on the North of Scotland and where better to indulge my Scottish accent fetish?

Time-Bending version:
Friday: New York City, USA(because I’ve never been there and I would really like to)
Saturday: Salvador, Bahia, Brazil (because I really want to be in a warm country right now and I loved Salvador & the beaches there)
Sunday: Angkor, Cambodia (because I really would like to see Angkor Wat. Also, warmth.)
Monday: Palermo, Sicily, Italy (actually for no particular reason other than I’ve never been there and it’s south)

2. Would you keep a secret from the closest person to you if you thought it was in their best interest?

Depends on the secret, I guess, but tending more towards no. That’s because I’m not a very secretive person in general and I don’t believe in protecting people by withholding information. But there could be an exception of course. Like if I murdered somebody, I wouldn’t necessarily tell to not involve them in the matter. Or something like that.

3. Tell me one odd/interesting fact about you that you have not revealed in some other crazy meme.

That I hate these fact questions?
When I was 6 years old or so, I once earned a chocolate bar by dancing to Kaoma’s Lambada. What could have been the start of a promising career was stifled by my lack of ambition, though. But it was awesome at the time.

4. You can have three wishes (for yourself, so forget all the ‘world peace etc’ BS) – what are they?

– unlimited book supply
– unlimited cinema access wherever I go
– a time turner

5. If you could change anything about your living situation, would you?

I would like to pay less rent. Please?

6. Who is your favorite character from a comic strip? Please post one strip for us to laugh at.

T-Rex, hands down.

[taken from here]

7. Now we have found you dead. What five people do you want to MEET in Heaven?

Hmmmm. There are many people, and then not so many (because I don’t know my history very well).

– Queen Elizabeth I
– Albert Einstein
– Bertrand Russell
– Hedy Lamarr
– Genghis Khan (I’m assuming that I can have a conversation with him. Otherwise I don’t want to meet him, really.)

8. So since you are dead, what will the title of your life story be?

It should be something great like Aron Ralston’s book is called Between a Rock and a Hard Place, which is all kinds of awesome. But as exciting as my life is, the book would probably be called Between a Movie Seat and a Book Shelf.

9. Word association time! What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you see the word pleasure?

My mind immediately splits and goes in two directions. One is very dirty and probably doesn’t need further explanation. The other is very chaste and involves coffee, a good book and a comfortable sofa.

Sleep Meme – Meme Monday

[taken from liberrydwarf]

How do you relax?

Watching movies, reading, drinking coffee, or the classic: sleeping.

What do you sleep in?

In bed, mostly. :) Nah, it depends on the temperature: if it’s not too cold, I like to sleep naked, but with the temperatures we’re currently having that’s out of the question. I usually wear a shirt and some sport pants and socks.

What kind of pillow do you like?

It has to be big and hard. [Uhm… that double entendre… yeah.]

Do you sew in bed? Read? Watch tv? Eat?

Read, yes. There’s no TV in my bedroom, I hate any kind of crumbs in my bed, so eating’s out and I sew rarely, and when I do I prefer to do it in front of the TV.

Early to bed or all-nighter?

Way too late for the time I have to get up. But no all-nighters.

When you were young did you sleep with a stuffed animal?

Loads. But there all packed safely in a box now..

Who would you most like to have a pillow fight with?

I’ve never really seen the appeal of pillow fights. Or mock-fights in general.

Book Meme – Meme Monday

[taken from here]

The book that’s been on your shelves the longest.

There are quite a few contenders for this one, actually, since I have a few books that I own since I was a child. There’s the beautiful illustrated Regentrude, a fairy tale by Theodor Storm, which I got when I was 6 or 7. There’s a book of Dinosaur stories which my father published when he owned a paper shop and which I got when I was about 5. But there are others, too.

A book that reminds you of something specific in your life (a person, a place, a time).

There is for example, Don Quixote which I read in the DR Congo and even though I didn’t particularly like it, I read it twice because I couldn’t bring enough books with me to keep me occupied for my entire stay. My “library” there consisted of Don Quixote by Cervantes, The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen, King Leopold’s Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror, and Heroism in Colonial Africa by Adam Hochschild and later I got a care package with Boyhood by J. M. Coetzee. There were a few other books which I can’t recall right now.

A book you acquired in some interesting way.

Does amazon count? ;) I bought a few second hand, I got some as a gift, most I got from a bookstore somewhere… I ordered one from Brazil, but there’s nothing really exciting about that, is there? I guess I’m not an interesting shopper.

The book that’s been with you to the most places.

I don’t think that there’s one book that I took to more places than on holiday once or something like that.

The most recent addition to your shelves.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Your current read, your last read and the book you’ll read next.

Currently reading: The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie
Last read: People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks
Next Read: Not sure yet. I wanted to re-read the Thursday Next series before plunging into the newest book, but I also wanted to read Jane Eyre before reading The Eyre Affair, so I’ll probably do that. But there’s always a billion books I want to read, and I’ve tried doing reading lists to forget nothing, but that rarely works out.

Movie Meme – Meme Monday

[taken from here.]

I wasn’t sure if I hadn’t yet done this one – but some quick searches suggest that I haven’t. In any case, if I am repeating myself, I guess it won’t be the first time.

Name a film that you have seen more than 10 times.

Clueless. I had a very obsessed phase, but I actually still think that it’s a pretty great movie. Sense and Sensibility (the Emma Thompson version), which is my go-to romantic movie and which I’ve probably seen a gazillion times. All the to-me-important Disney movies (The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, The Beauty and the Beast, Robin Hood etc). Pretty much any movie I’ve seen as a kid I’d watch over and over again if I liked it.

Name a film that you’ve seen multiple times in the cinema.

There’s Titanic (which I’ve seen twice), Clash of the Titans (twice), Tangled (twice), The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (three times), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (twice). And I think that’s a comprehensive list of all films I’ve seen multiple times in the cinema. [Actually, I’m not sure any more if I didn’t see Moulin Rouge! twice, too.]

Name an actor that would make you more inclined to see a film.

There are quite a few actors and actresses that will get me to go to the cinema and even more where I’ll watch a film at home just because they’re in it. But this and this are starts. Then I’d add Sam Rockwell, Natalie Portman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, James MacAvoy, …

Name an actor that would make you less likely to see a film.

I’m staying far, far, far away from any project that includes Rob Schneider in any way, shape or form [if I don’t, it’s usually by mistake or because somebody else is involved that I just love too much]. Adam Sandler and Mike Myers usually get the same reaction, but do have some redeeming quality [Punch Drunk Love/Shrek or 54]. And I’m really starting to get fed up with Michael Cera. Arrested Development cred only gets you so far (the same goes for Jason Bateman, btw).
As for actresses – Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and other women [and it is mostly women] that get famous for something other than acting, then get cast in movies for their celebrity status and not any actual talent annoy me, but I will bear with them, if I have to (which I usually don’t). There’s no actual actress I can think of that sends me screaming as Rob Schneider does.

Name a film that you can and do quote from.

Sometimes I think that there’s hardly a movie I don’t quote from. But frontrunners surely are the Lord of the Rings movies. Alexander is also very quotable (to ridicule it), as is 300 (for its pathos). The Princess Bride, of course. And very many TV shows.

Name a film musical that you know all of the lyrics to all of the songs.

I learn lyrics quickly and easily and with gusto. So, the list is long. There’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hair, The Lion King, Moulin Rouge, Doctor Horrible, that one Buffy musical episode (THEY GOT THE MUSTARD OUT), and I know pretty much all the lyrics to Chicago. And that’s just off the top of my head. I’m sure that I’m forgetting something.

Name a film that you would recommend everyone see.

Good grief, I can never choose only one. Start here. Come back when you’re done with that list.

Ever walked out of a film?

No. But I was this closed with The Boat That Rocked. [I fell asleep a couple of times in the cinema, though.]

Name a film that made you cry in the cinema.

Only one? The last was Hereafter. Which I didn’t particularly like, but still. Crybaby.

Yes, please. Though I’m usually too cheap to buy it.

How often do you go to the cinema (as opposed to renting them or watching them at home)?

2-3 times a week I’d say. And I watch about 1-2 movies a week at home.

What’s the last film you saw in the cinema?

Tron Legacy. [Which probably won’t be true anymore at the time of posting this.]

What’s your favourite/preferred genre of film?

Oh boy. Fantasy. Science Fiction. Horror. Some romance. Historicals. Book adaptations. Combinations thereof. The only genre I don’t care very much for is crime/police procedurals. But even there, I’ll gladly make exceptions if the film is good enough.

What’s the first film you remember seeing in the cinema?

I’ve always been going to the cinema. I don’t remember the first time I went or even remember a first movie. I’m pretty sure that I saw Home Alone in the cinema – and that was pretty early.

What film do you wish you had never seen?

The most recent film I wish I’d never seen is Klimt.

What is the scariest film you’ve seen?

The Ring. The American version. I still didn’t watch the Japanese version because I’ll probably pee my pants.

If you could be any character portrayed in a movie, who would it be?

Huh… good question. Not a specific character but I think I’d have fun playing a ass-kicking woman like most of the characters Angelina Jolie picks to play. [One of the reasons I really like her as an actress.]

Total number of films you own on DVD and video.

I don’t know. I never counted them and I didn’t yet get around to do for my DVD collection what librarything did to my book collection: organise them online. But I’m guessing around 300, 400 or somesuch number.

Last film you bought.

Oh boy. I recently bought Capote, but I bought it together with a couple of other films I can’t recall right now.

Last film you watched.

Also Tron: Legacy. But I’m planning a movie evening, so this will probably have changed in a few hours.

Five films that mean a lot to you.

There are many films that mean many different things to me. There’s hardly a film I’ve seen that doesn’t mean anything to me and there are a few films I haven’t seen that still mean something to me.
