Deadra sent me a long list of Top 10 stuff she would like to see and asked for Screen Kisses to go first. I’m of course ever obliging. So, here’s my Top 10 Big Screen Kisses [which means that only movies with a cinematical release need apply]. [If you want I can do another one with TV Kisses. But seriously – too many good kisses out there to pack them all into one list. :)]
Btw, if you have a Top 10 list you’d like to see, feel free to tell me.
There are many different kinds of kisses – sweet, passionate, painful, romantic, fun etc etc etc. It’s hard to rank them because a sweet kiss has an entirely different effect than a passionate one etc. But I tried to do so anyway. All things considered, I probably should have done a list for every category, but now it’s too late. :)
Plus, I should probably point out that there are only rather recent movies on the list. First of all – I know it’s a shame, but I haven’t seen many movies older than 30 years or so. Second, have you seen the screen kisses from the fifties and sixties? Closed mouths, pressing so hard against each other that my neck starts to hurt just from watching. And more often than not the guys are so forceful that it borders on assault. Not the kind of kiss I like.
But here are the kind of kisses I do like:
10. Vada and Thomas J in My Girl
My Girl was the first really romantic movie in my life. And did I ever cry my eyes out! Anna Chlumsky‘s and Macaulay Culkin‘s kiss is so very cute and it also nicely captures the whole “growing up” thing.
[Oh, I need to see this film again…]
9. Jack and Rose in Titanic
Oh, come on – this kiss is so wildly romantic, it’s more or less the embodiment of escapism. You don’t even care that the set design in the background is so obviously painted that it hurts, when Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet finally kiss, everything’s perfect.
[And I guess I just have to face that I belong to the generation which was really spoiled by this movie.]
8. Maria and Ned in Stage Beauty
Stage Beauty has probably the most impressive Othello I have ever seen, but I also really like this kiss between Billy Crudup and Claire Danes. The whole movie is worth to see – so if you get the chance, this is a definite recommendation.
7. Gerry and Holly in P.S. I Love You
MY GOODNESS! The whole scenery and the whole story make every kitsch-meter explode, but Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank somehow manage to not make it corny. Plus, I love it when a kiss can also make me smile – and this one does.
6. Jo and Friedrich in Little Women
Gabriel Byrne: “My hands are empty.”
Winona Ryder: “They’re not empty now.”
‘Nuff said.
5. Sam and Josie in Never Been Kissed
I don’t exactly know why I love this movie, but love it I do. And everytime I watch it, I seriously get tears in my eyes at this last scene. Maybe it’s romantic overload that makes me feel this way, but Drew Barrymore and Michael Vartan get to me.
4. Sophie and Julien in Love Me If You Dare
Love Me If You Dare is one heck of a film and the relationship between Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet might be one of the most interesting relationships ever. Here’s their first kiss which is very sweet and very disturbing at the same time.
3. Romeo and Juliet in Romeo + Juliet
So, Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes each make another appearance. Who would have thought?
I don’t think I need to explain how good this movie in general is, and how amazing Shakespeare is. Plus, what would a list like this be without at least one wet kiss?
2. Cecilia and Robbie in Atonement
Actually, it’s not only the kiss but the whole scene in the library which is absolutely brilliant (and very, very sexy). Sparks are flying like rockets between Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. It is very impressive to watch.
[Deadra, you can breathe easy now – see, I did include James McAvoy. :)]
1. Jack and Ennis in Brokeback Mountain
I get goosebumps just thinking about this scene. Abso-fucking-lutely amazing. If you only watch one scene from the whole movie (which would be very sad because you should see it all), you should watch this one. Heath Ledger and Jack Gyllenhaal manage to pack everything in it. Everything.
Thanks for this one.
I’m mostly with you where the list is concerned. Mostly. I would have picked the other kiss from “Romeo&Juliet” (the one where she has her wings on), and my entry for the “wet kiss” category would have been the one from “The Notebook” (instead of the one from “Never Been Kissed”).
My favourite James McAvoy-kiss would be the one in “Penelope” – because it melts me into a happy little puddle every time. And because it’s sort of a stand-alone kiss, whereas the one in “Atonement” is just the start of one of the “10 hottest sex scenes”.
Oh, and I see your Titanic-kitschfest-kiss and raise you an Elephant Love Medley ^^
Sure thing, sure thing. I had fun doing it.
The Notebook’s kiss is wonderful as well… It just barely didn’t make the cut. [But I think that it’s not the most romantic scene in the movie, so that’s what swayed me in the end.]
Nah, I like “my” Romeo+Juliet-kiss better – there they both already know what they’re getting into. ;)
The Penelope-Kiss is very nice, too. But the Atonement kiss is just so steaming, I couldn’t not include it. [Although you’re right about the 10 hottest sex scenes. :)]
Oh yeah, the Elephant Love Medley should have been on here, too… 10 just isn’t enough.
Woah! Awesome list.
Here’s some of my favorites –
Cinema Paradiso – the kiss in the rain with that phenomenal score in the background.

The Big Sleep – “I liked that, I’d like more.”

Wong Kar Wai’s beautifully shot kiss from My Blueberry Nights. Forget the rest of the movie.
Wall-E and Eva’s kiss and dance –
Nice collection yourself – I just can’t agree with the Blueberry Nights kiss. All that made me think was how terribly uncomfortable it must be. Plus, I kind of thought it disconcerting that he kisses her while she’s asleep.
But I liked the rest of the movie. :)
You are right, the Blueberry kiss looked a little uncomfortable and creepy. But then again, they seemed so into it. And very passionately too.
p.s. And uncomfortable as it may be, I’d love to kiss someone like that. :)
Well, uncomfortable or not, it was beautifully shot. And maybe it’s one of those things that look more uncomfortable than they actually are? You won’t know until you try, right? :)
No upside-down Spiderman kiss?
Actually, that kiss didn’t do much for me. Even though it’s a landmark of modern movie making!
