Warning: very disgusting but completely awesome:
Stan Lee says that having a black Spiderman would be too confusing for the poor, little audience. O_o Donald Glover for Spiderman? I’m so there.
First Tangled trailer looks pretty awesome.
Guillermo Del Toro’s Next Picture Might Be Van Helsing.
Science
Women Scientists on the Debate over Women in Science.

Alright…here goes:
– The Vader Project is made of win. I like.
– The Mortal Kombat vid is AWESOME. I want the whole film and I want it with exactly this concept (and this cast and more cast) and I want it now. (Somewhere inside me, there’s a 12 year-old fanboy _drooling_ right now)
– Black Spidey wouldn’t be too confusing for the audience (what with the audience having two braincells or more), but I wouldn’t want him to be black. What I’d want is an equally awesome black superhero. A new one. (Because the world can never have enough awesome superheroes.) Or at the very least a black Captain America. Because, considering the origin story, Cap ought to have been black anyway. What with history, and everything.
– You liked the Tangled trailer? Really?! I loved the concept when they first started talking about it, when Rapunzel was basically going to be a self-rescuing princess and the guy was going to be voiced by Matthew Gray Gubler. Now, she’s been relegated to a supporting role in her own damn story. I watched the trailer, I glowered. Then I glowered some more. Thinking about it, I’m still glowering.
– A not-awful Van Helsing? Want. I’m still recovering from the last one, and a dose of GDT would help.
– I don’t care about Spidey’s skin color but why not have both – a great new black guy and a black Spiderman? Also, Donald Glover is awesome and he would make a great Spidey.
– Yeah, I liked the Tangled trailer, even though I don’t like what it makes of Rapunzel.
Riiiight:
* Mortal Kombat vid: My attention span is too short for this stuff. Too much gore, too
* Black Spiderman Woah, get over it. He’s a red-and-blue spiderman most of the time anyway.
* secret powers of time: interesting theory.
@ Deadra: Why wouldn’t you want Spiderman to be black? I’d like that.
I think the important things about Spiderman are:
* his trouble balancing his jobs and being a hero
* being a weakling in real life
* his relations with the two women in his life (one romantic, one maternal)
* and of course crawling around in his tights, saving orphans from burning houses
I just think that being a lily-white kid from the suburbs makes up an integral part of who Peter Parker is. (I realise that’s a pretty thin argument.)
I also think that while we need more diverse characters in pop culture, it would be somewhat pathetic to just paint a few of the better known ones black. Why not create new ones? Brilliant new ones? To enrich culture in two ways instead of one?
(That’s not to say that I wouldn’t be all for, say, a special JLA story arc where everyone’s race is changed, or everyone’s gender, for that matter. That would be interesting as a sort of short experiment…what would change, what wouldn’t, that sort of thing.)
