Kings of Leon (Support: The Whigs)

The Kings of Leon are an American rock band, The Whigs are, too.

The Whigs

Before the show, I had heard one song by The Whigs, in preparation for the concert. It didn’t blow me away, but it wasn’t bad. But turns out, their concert was exactly like that, too. It went down easy enough, but there wasn’t a single melody that really stuck with me.

It might have also been because I was sitting really far from the stage (why up high right under the ceiling…) and that wasn’t really the best position to really get into the show in any case.

[The concert was in the Stadthalle, probably the biggest concert venue in all of Austria. I bought the tickets on the day the sale started and I only got seats and only in this category. Not that I could have afforded any other category, but still people, I practically needed a telescope.]

[The red dot is about where we were sitting. Picture taken from here. The stage was on the left, outside the frame.]

The Kings of Leon show was good. They had an awesome stage design and the camera for the video wall was very well handled. What didn’t work so well was the fireworks in the end, which just seemed to try a little too hard. [Maybe I was a little too far away for that, too…]

Frontman Caleb Followill apologised early-on that he was a little sick and his voice therefore not up-to-par (which I didn’t notice, not even after he told us. Which says everything about my musicality you have to know). Apart from that there was practically no interaction with the audience though, which I found a little sad. There could have been a little more of that.

They played their biggest hits, though the whole show was more focussed on the new album. Which is not really surprising, since it’s the Come Around Sundown tour. And since they’ve gotten progressively better with each album – yay! Anyway, the setlist worked really well. I was just a little surprised that the last song they played was Black Thumbnail and that they didn’t leave it at Sex on Fire, since Black Thumbnail isn’t really their biggest hit. [I probably would have put The End last, just for the “pun.”]

I have to admit that I didn’t get into the show as much as I usually do at concerts. It might have been the distance, it might have been the lack of interaction with the audience or it might have been Dumb and Dumber in front of us who were really drunk and throwing stuff and generally making asses of themselves.

But I really enjoyed myself and the show and the concert and if you like the Kings of Leon, you should definitely see them live some time.
