Reading Meme – Meme Monday

[taken from liberrydwarf, as usual]

1. Do you remember learning to read? How old were you?
It was the summer before I got into school, so I was six. We were at my grandmother’s place and my sister taught me by making little drawings (I distinctly remember a drawing of a latern post). 5 months later, I was reading Pippi Longstockings on my own.

2. What do you find most challenging to read?
For some reason, it’s non-fiction that eludes me. I find the books, I think they”re interesting, I buy them, I start reading them, I still think they are interesting and then I never finish. I don’t know why.

3. What are your library habits?
I have none. I don’t use the library because I’m extremely possessive when it comes to books.

4. Have your library habits changed since you were younger?
Between 10 and 14, I used to go to the school library a lot. Now I don’t.

5. Has social media changed your reading life?
I discover different books than I would without, I think. And I read a whole lot more online.

6. What percentage of your books do you get from new book stores, second hand books stores, the library, online exchange sites, online retailers, e-books, other?
I buy almost all my books online or new in a certain bookstore in Vienna. I do buy a few second hand, but I have yet to discover a really good used bookstore in Austria. When I’m in Britain, I usually revel in the second hand possibilities there.

7. What are your pet peeves about the way people treat books?
Since I’m not very cautious with my books, I’m in no position to judge. But I don’t understand people who mark pages by folding the corners on purpose.

8. Do you read for pleasure or for work?
For pleasure. Though I’d love to make it my work. Somebody need a professional reviewer?

9. When you give people books as gifts, how do you decide what to give them?
What they usually read, what I think sounds interesting if I put myself in their shoes, generally what I think they’d like (regardless of whether I’d like it or not).
