Ballet Revolución is a dance show that combines classical and contemporary dance with pop and Cuban music.
I’ve mentioned before: I’m a sucker for these mash-up things and for dance in general and for shows of this kind. And while Ballet Revolución might not be quite as good as Rock the Ballet (it did lack a strip after all), it is pretty damn fantastic in its own right.
I really enjoyed that there was a live band on stage with the dancers. Most of the time they were being kept invisible behind a screen but it really gave the whole thing a fresh spin. But the band did get in the way a bit sometimes, especially during the 10 hour bongo solo that just wouldn’t end.
That was one of the reasons why the show just wasn’t as great as I would have liked it to be. The other was that the music was just a bit too much latino and just a tad too little pop for my taste.
In fact, I did like it best when they danced to the worst party music. That’s where the choreographies and the music and the dancers really came together. That and the unexpected Swan Lake choreography during Hips Don’t Lie.
Put altogether, I really did enjoy the show and myself. The dancers, as far as I can tell, were really great (though they weren’t as synchronized as I’m used to from ballet – and I’m not really sure whether that was supposed to be like it all the time). I really couldn’t take my eyes of them – and what more could you ask for?
Summarising: Really cool, especially if you love Latino rhythms.
