Favula
Director: Raúl Perrone
Writer: Raúl Perrone
Cast: Sergio Boggio, Sara Navarro, Nix Noise, Lucia Ozan, Aleli Sueldo
Part of: Viennale
Plot: [I don’t think I can write a meaningful plot description – so I’ll describe the film instead.]
Favula tells a fable, almost without dialogue, most of it in a fictional language, only some parts cryptically subtitled. All in the style of George Méliès, with double exposure and old-timey special effects and in a jungle.
I thought that the concept of Favula sounded really cool, but unfortunately it didn’t work one bit for me.
I wasn’t tired when I went into the film but I kept drifting off with no chance of staying focused, or even awake. So take my review with a grain of sand because I probably only saw half of the film, at most. The rest of the time I slept or tried not to go cross-eyed with attempting to stay awake. Which didn’t help with my general confusion about what was going on on-screen.
I mean, visually the film did have its charm. It looked really cool. And I liked the reduction on sounds and images to see what’s possible with film alone as the language. I can imagine that if it had been a short film, I would have loved it.
But it wasn’t short. And I didn’t love it. Everything was too long – not only the film itself, but also every single scene went on too long.
I just reall didn’t know what to do with it. So it’s probably best that I slept for most of the time.
