Fit is the first novella in the Fit Trilogy by Rebekah Weatherspoon.
Finished on: 6.5.2023

Content Note: (slight) fatmisia

Plot:
Violet loves food, and she loves that she gets to work for the Food Network as a producer of a reality cooking show. But recently she has been a bit unhappy with her weight and she would like to get fitter. But the group class her best friend dragged her to is definitely not the best way to work on her fitness. She gets a tip for a private trainer, though – Grant. Grant does not only run his own fitness studio, he is also a skilled Dom – and he likes to mix both of his passions. But whether Violet is open to mixing training and sex is another question.

Fit is a fine read that felt a little hurried. But if you’re looking for something quick, steamy, but above all very sweet, this is a good tip for you.

I will admit that I had my doubts about the novella going in. I mean, the fitness setting seems very questionable for me, especially since it starts with Violet just really wanting to lose weight. As a fat woman myself, all kinds of red flags went up for me with that set-up and I only read the book in the first place because Weatherspoon often features fat protagonists, is fat and a fat-activist herself. And while I was right to trust that this wouldn’t be some kind of make-over fantasy, in this case, the book doesn’t quite manage to satisfy my fat-activist sensibilities. Violet is, of course, allowed to feel uncomfortable with her body, and it’s nice that Grant keeps telling her that he likes her curves and doesn’t feel that she needs to lose weight, but the final conclusion that Violet’s fitness mission is not so much about losing weight but more about treating herself and her body well rings hollow. It just comes too quickly and is basically only a throw-away line.

That’s because the book is so busy with the sexual and romantic dynamic that it doesn’t really have space for much of anything else in its slim 80 or so pages. I did enjoy that dynamic overall, despite some reluctance about the set-up that ties the sex to the training so much. But Grant and Violet are cute together and it is obvious that they empower each other, that they grow with each other and that they challenge eacht other – and that’s always nice.

I do like Dom/sub stuff, and that is also very nicely handled here. Especially since Weatherspoon keeps it very soft and sweet and warm here. Don’t get me wrong, there are steamy moments aplenty, but the core everything is built around is all fluff. And that is very enjoyable, especially considering that the novella is such a quick read.

Summarizing: sweet and cute.
