Plot:
Aram (Francisco Barreiro) is the perfect worker, a diligent not too ambitious lawyer who does his best at his job and works long hours without complaining. Or at least that’s what it looks like to his boss and his wife. Secretly, Aram is meticulously planning the kidnapping of a high school student (Daniela Soto Vell): he stalks her, he times how long it takes to choke somebody unconscious (with his dementia-suffering father as experimental object), plays with his son to find out about carrying bodies. He even visits (apparently regularly) a sex worker and asks her about tying people up. When he finally feels he has covered all his bases, he goes through with it – but to what end?

Scherzo Diabolico lives off Francisco Barreiro’s performance. But when Aram takes a back seat in the later half, the film falls apart both regarding tension and logic.

Plot:
Ambrose (Nick Damici) used to be a soldier but now he is old and blind. He just moved to a new place, a retirement community. But instead of the peace and quite one would associate with such a community, Ambrose finds that people there are dying from mysterious dog bites quite a lot. But at the first full moon, Ambrose is attacked himself and realizes that those are not actually dogs. So he decides to go to war with the creatures.

With the choice of setting and protagonist, Late Phases has all the possibilities for a really fresh take on werewolf stories. But while the idea is great, its execution left me completely cold.

Plot:
Felix (Francisco Barreiro) and Sol (Laura Caro) are on a daytrip with their children Sara (Michele Garcia) and Adolfo (Alan Martinez). But while Felix and Sol want to take a break, the kids want to explore a nearby hill. They get the permission from their parents but don’t come back. They remain lost for an entire night before returning home, somehow changed.

The film could have been really good. Unfortunately Adrián García Bogliano obviously has huge issues with women/female sexuality which taints the film. Plus, after a while it just became boring.

[I’m saving myself from mentioning the cast as well, especially since, apart from Ingrid Bolsø Berdal there wasn’t anybody in it I knew anyway.]

Plot:
The ABCs of Death is an episode movie in which 26 directors each got a letter in the alphabet to which they chose a word from which they built their story/short film.

The ABCs of Death has its good moments, but far from all episodes were my thing. There is a surprising amount of toilet humor in the movie (which I minded less than I usually do, but still) and I generally had my issues with the structure. 26 short films are a lot to take in and I would have appreciated if the movie was broken up into two parts (A-L and M-Z or something). Also, because of the alphabetic structure, they couldn’t take the mood or the pacing into consideration, so funny is followed by sadness by gore by blood by horror by funny etc. So maybe one should be watching the entire movie in short film increments.
