Clara (Anne Schäfer) has returned to university after a long break and is now working on her PhD and teaching some classes. Her work eats up all her time, and she barely sees her daughter Emma (Emma Frieda Brüggler) who lives with her father. In practically stolen moments, Clara has an affair with a student (Marcel Kohler). With a deadline looming for a paper, Clara also has to go to her hometown for the weekend to celebrate her mother Inge’s (Anne-Kathrin Gummich) birthday. It gets to be a little much altogether.

Alle reden übers Wetter is a neat film that will speak to anybody who has grown a little too big for their hometown. It examines Clara’s situation with a sharp eye and manages to find the good with the bad.

Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) is a video game designer. He became famous with a game that has, by now, achieved cult status, and there is huge pressure for him to recreate this success with a new entry into the franchise. He doesn’t want to do that, though, and escapes as much as he can into a coffee shop where he is too shy to talk to frequent patron Tiffany (Carrie-Anne Moss). But that’s not the only thing Thomas is struggling with. He has frequent dreams of a different life, one where he is Neo. And maybe that life is more real than he thought.

We were a group of three people watching The Matrix Resurrections in the cinema. One was very excited about this film, one was somewhere in the middle, and one was rather bored with it. Unfortunately, that third person was me. But obviously, impressions of it vary greatly. I just wish I could have gotten more out of it.

Freier Fall [Free Fall] (2013)

Freier Fall
Director: Stephan Lacant
Writer: Stephan Lacant, Karsten Dahlem
Cast: Hanno Koffler, Max Riemelt, Katharina Schüttler, Oliver Bröcker, Shenja Lacher
Part of: identities Festival

Marc (Hanno Koffler) is a police man, happily married with Bettina (Katharina Schüttler) and they are expecting their first child. But then Marc meets Kay (Max Riemelt) during a training and a little while later, Kay gets transferred to Marc’s station. Even though Marc turned down Kay’s first advances, he is drawn to him and so the two of them start an affair after all.

Freier Fall tackels about 20 different issues at once – from (undiscovered) homosexuality to bullying in the police force – and somehow it manages to juggle them all and still tell an engaging story that isn’t weighed down by its social agenda. Instead it treats that agenda as practically unimportant which just makes it stand out all the more.
