Yesterday, when I had to get a break from my bitchings about books, I went to shakesville. I’m no regular there, but I drop by from time to time.
From there I came to this. For the people who don’t want to click on the link: Jay Leno recently had Ryan Philippe in his Tonight Show. Philippe started out as an actor where he played a *gasp* gay character. Leno obviously found this hilarious and tried to make him do his “gayest look“. The link above is now to an older letter to Jay Leno by Jeff Whitty, a NY playwright, a reaction to another not really funny gay joke by Mr. Leno.
Apart from the story behind it, the letter says the following:
“You think gay people are great material. I think of a silent holocaust that continues to this day.”
I think I never heard a phrase quite so fitting like silent holocaust for what is going on in more conservative circles regarding homosexuals. It may sound melodramatic, but life sometimes just is.
Talking about melodramatic, I want to sit in a corner now and sob.
That phrase is indeed quite well articulated. and powerful. but why does it make you feel so down?
Because it’s so true. Because I feel helpless when I hear it, and overwhelmed. I’m not gay myself, mostly at least ;), but I have gay friends and I hear their stories and I see their fear and I feel like one of the people in WW II who said “I couldn’t do anything” and just let things happen.
That’s why.
