WordPress?

WordPress has this new features with related posts… Interesting idea but how they get the relation isn’t really clear to me.

For example, for my entry from friday about the family, they suggest a post with the lyrics of “Hips don’t lie”. Huh?

  1. I think their algorithm sucks. I’ve seen a whole bunch of unrelated posts! Plus, I don’t understand that why isn’t there an option that’ll allow me to show posts from only my blog? Why is it “all or none”? I wrote this on their news page and Matt didn’t approve my comment. He only approves those comments where people praise him.

  2. Yeah, the algorithm must be weird if stuff like that turns up. Oh well. I guess it’s just one thing I’ll have to ignore. Other than that I really, really like WordPress.

  3. @ Kalafudra:

I do not think the feature is active on all blogs on all posts.

I got some links on one post (2 of 3 were not relevant) and one of my blog posts was linked up to a relevant post elsewhere (DNA testing). I think the algorithm is using tags which are fairly subjective and definitionally uneven.

    @ Ruhi:

I asked the same question as you and referred to your comment. Both your comment and mine are there :-) Many other people also raised the same question.

I also noticed that the links do not show on the post but only when I click the ‘comments’ link. I saw no outgoing links from the few I received.

At any rate, I have started doing those ‘related’ links thing myself in the last some days. So I would not automate it esp since I do not link all relevant posts but the _most_ relevant ones which is a fairly high level of subjectivity.

Of course there is the option to hide them all.

Let’s see how it evolves. Writing code is a sausage making process if done in public, so with this feature. I think it is well-meant but they will tweak it as time goes by.
