Book Tag

bApH tagged me.

Take the nearest book (It by Stephen King. I never read it before which is quite shameful for a King fan. Haven’t even seen the movie – so don’t you go and spoil it for me!) and write three sentences from page 123, from the fifth sentence on.

Are you here, Tom? Are you?
He pushed the thought away. The strip of leather which had once been a belt swung slowly before him like a pendulum.

I count the first two sentences as one, else it would be too short. It’s short enough already.

I tag L., Deadra (yet another try to get you blogging again. Or at least commenting. Some sign that you’re alive, virtually speaking, girl!!!) and Shefaly [So, when you have time to do the meme stuff, you’ll be occupied :)].

Plus a late addition: indisch

  1. Kalafudra, thanks for the tag.

I have seen the meme at two other blogs and have used the comments section to respond. Just my twist on the meme.. :-)

Alas the nearest ‘book’ I have does not have 123 pages. So I will go to the nearest book that I can reach without stretching. What to do? I am lazy like that (and on a deadline)

Book: Rules and Meanings (ed Mary Douglas)

Page 123, 3 lines after the 5th sentence:

Among the tribes of the lower Niger, it is even forbidden for women to use their left hands when cooking, evidently under pain of being accused of attempted poisoning and sorcery. The left hand, like those pariahs on whom all impure tasks are thrust, may concern itself only with disgusting duties. We are far from the sanctuary here; but the dominion of religious concepts is so powerful that it makes itself felt in the dining-room, the kitchen, and even in those places haunted by demons and which we dare not name.

    Piques your interest? :-)

  2. ooo, Stephen King. I remember reading one book when I was way back home and feeling queasy and weird. I should read again, am sure I’d feel differently!

Hopped on here via Baph. Nice place :)

  3. Welcome, welcome! And thank you!

I love Stephen King. He combines good writing style with fun (as opposed to intellectually challenging) reading, creativity and predictiveness in the perfect blend of entertainment.
Really cool. You should give him another try, if you are into horror stuff.

  4. @ Kalafudra: I borrowed that book from someone. I have not had time to start on it because about 7 or 8 books are in the middle of being ‘processed’. I know, sounds awful. But I am hoping to get a short break soon to read.

  5. The only King novel I read was “Thinner”. Which was, like you put it, fun reading. “It” has been highly recommended to me in the past; perhaps I will pick it up when I feel like something “fun (as opposed to intellectually challenging) reading, creativity and predictiveness in the perfect blend of entertainment.”

  6. @Shefaly:
7-8 books? Not bad… I usually limit myself to 3-5… :) But when you’ve read it, let me know. It definitely sounds cool.

    @Charl:
I’ll post my review of “It” when I’ve finished the book. Which may take awhile since it’s a 1116 page novel (and I’m at page 186). But so far it’s good.
My favourite Kings are “The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon”, “Needful Things” and his short novels “The Fog” and “Stand by Me” (in no particular order). They are probably easier to start with as they are not so long. But if you enjoyed “Thinner”, you’re not a complete King newbie, so you might now what you’re getting into :)
