Okay, I will have to admit two things, none particularly shameful, sorry to disappoint, but things you maybe didn’t know about me: 1. I have a serious crush on Lee Pace and 2. I like movies and books which broach the issue of homosexuality and gender, even though personally, I don’t have any issues with either (or at least not compared to some people). Subsequently, there’s probably a third thing you didn’t know: I find it incredibly sexy in straight men, when they aren’t afraid of getting it on with another guy or wearing a dress/skirt.
So, when I found out that Lee Pace starred in Soldier’s Girl, alongside Troy Garity, it definitely had to be watched.
Soldier’s Girl is the (true) story of a young soldier (Troy Garity), who falls in love with a transsexual woman (Lee Pace). They become a couple and are happy with each other, until he gets beaten to death by some fellow soldier(s) for dating her.
So, from the plot outline, I guess you won’t be surprised to hear that it wasn’t a feel good movie. It’s a depressing, touching story and I cried my eyes out.
And it was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. The acting was impeccable. While special regards go of course to Lee Pace (I showed deadra the first few minutes of the film and her comment was, “this isn’t a guy dressed up as a woman. Look at those movements. This is a woman!”), Troy Garity’s performance should not be overlooked. Unfortunately, it’s rather easy to do just that as he shares a lot of screen time with Shawn Hatosy, who has a more noticeable [read: crazy] character.
Another thing I loved about the film was that they had actually sex scenes for Barry and Calpernia. No weird special shoulder squeezes, no hugs, where there should be kisses, just normal sex scenes. No, not normal, more beautiful than your average Hollywood scenes.
It really is a must see movie in my opinion.
[If you’re interested in those kind of movies (gender, homosexuality), let me know! I can write a few reviews about other, very good movies.]

For everyone who had this in an unfinished version in their reader already yesterday, sorry! I accidentally hit publish instead of save.

Stop whatever you’re doing now and rent Neil Jordan’s The Crying Game. One of the best films of the 90s…with a similar theme.
I already heard of it, never seen it though. I will watch it as soon as possible!
