Waltz with Bashir (2008)

Waltz with Bashir is Ari Folman‘s animated documentary about the 1982 war in Lebanon and the massacre in a refugee camp.

The story follows Ari directly. During a conversation with a friend (the friend tells him about the nightmares he’s been having about the war), Ari discovers that he has no memories of what has happened during the war, in which he was a soldier. He takes us on the journey of rediscovering his own recollections through listening to the stories other people have to tell about the war.

The whole movie is animated, and the artwork is beautiful, very captivating and has a very distinct style. Colours and facial expressions are used very aptly.

Of course, the whole history of what happened in this war is gruesome and WwB doesn’t sugarcoat it. [Although I have to say, I cried more when I saw Hotel Rwanda.] But it still keeps a sense of humour. I was surprised (and very, very grateful) that I could laugh a couple of times. [While far from being a funny movie, I did laugh more than while watching Quantum of Solace.]

If you want to watch it (and you should), be sure to have something else to watch or read afterwards, which is mindless and funny and doesn’t sink you into a deep depression. Oh, and have chocolate close to you. Lots of chocolate.

  1. I’ve been seeing trailers for this film for a while now, before every film that I watched in the arthouse theater next door in recent memory. You’re right, the animation looks stunning. I am looking forward to this.

  2. Yeah, it gets a lot of media coverage and marketing. [Although nothing compared to an Austrian pregnancy documentary: 3 (three) trailers before Waltz with Bashir alone…] But rightly so, imo.

  3. I second the chocolate advice.

Although it has been scientifically proven (ie done by me/us) that tons of Japanese food followed by “The Accidental Husband” are also effective ^_^
