There are two kinds of Break-Up Songs in the world:
- The songs that make you wallow in self-pity until you’re ready to slit your wrists, convinced that the one true love just left you.
- The songs that will pick up the pieces after that self-pity phase, the range going from angry to reconciliatory.
Because of this dichotomy, this list will be twofold as well. Five songs will be of the first category, five of the second. If you’re just going through a break-up, you might want to skip the first five songs. [Or you’re listening to these songs all the time anyway and want to sound off about my choices. You’re very welcome to do either.]
Just a warning before we start: This list is unashamedly pop-music-y. Don’t expect any unknown gems being uncovered, is all I’m saying.
Self-Pity Songs
5. The Winner Takes It All – Abba
There’s something very poignant about this song. Just try to not think about Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep.
4. Careless Whisper – Wham!
Awwwwwwwwwwww. There’s nothing else to say. I think it’s the sax that makes this song so special.
3. Ain’t No Sunshine – Bill Withers
When I sing it, it’s usually “Ain’t no sunshine when he’s gone”, but same difference.
I totally love that song.
2. All By Myself – Celine Dion
The perfect song to put on really loudly and sing so that all your neighbours hear and know not to ask about that nice boyfriend/girlfriend anymore.
1. Nothing Compares 2 U – Sinead O’Connor
Do I really need to explain?
Pick-Yourself-Up-Again Songs
5. Strong Enough – Cher
Ah, the first hint of survival. And yet, everything still revolves around the ex…
4. Cry Me A River – Justin Timberlake
And get out that anger! A little bit of revenge [and some great, albeit short choreography…] and you’ll feel that much better. Maybe.
3. Hit the Road, Jack – Ray Charles
I love that the song itself just makes you want to dance. Because, let’s face it, after a break-up, a good dance can mean the world.
2. These Boots Are Made for Walking – Nancy Sinatra
And now, a short trip back to anger and revenge. But in such a charming way and combined with the dancing.
1. I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor
Okay, seriously, could I have done this list without this song? Yeah, I didn’t think so, either.
