Hunger is Steven Hentges‘ newest film, starring Lori Heuring, Linden Ashby, Joe Egender, Lea Kohl and Julian Rojas. [Not to be confused with this Hunger.]
Plot:
Five people wake up in a dark hole with no idea how or why they got there. They have loads of water but no food – and no possibility to escape. Then they find a knife. Attached to it is the message that the average human can last 30 days without food. And so the countdown begins.
I like one room movies and I thought this had a nice premise. Unfortunately, they are not able to keep up the tension and about 40 mins in, I just lost interest. But yay for female characters in this movie.
For a movie of its kind, the performances were rather good. Especially Linden Ashby [who got so old. Mortal Kombat really has been a while ago. Still good-looking though], though I have to admit that he also had the best male character.
The other male characters were rather flat and basically walking stereotypes, especially the big bad. The script is generally rather badly executed. Which might be explained by it being L. D. Goffigan‘s first. But it’s also the biggest problem when it comes to the lack of tension in the second half, so it can’t really be forgiven.
What L. D. Goffigan did right were the two female characters, though. Not only is the audience stand-in a strong, rational, competent woman, which is rare enough, but the second woman was even more interesting: she was in an abusive relationship but managed the jump from victim status [a development we don’t get to see, we only see the result].
It quite literally leaves his scars on her and she goes from victim to offender, which is not ideal, but she’s allowed to go through this development and doesn’t get punished for it and isn’t made a victim again which is all kinds of awesome.
Unfortunately, all of that isn’t enough when you just aren’t that interested in what happens next, since you can pretty much guess anyway.
Summarising: can be skipped. But for its treatment of women, it should be recommended.
