[Rec] is a movie directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, written by them together with Luiso Berdejo and starring Manuela Velasco, Ferran Terraza, Pablo Rosso and David Vert.
Plot:
Ángela (Manuela Velasco) is a young reporter who does a tag-along piece about a fire station in Barcelona. Together with her cameraman Pablo (Pablo Rosso) they head out on a call with the firemen to a woman trapped in an apartment building. But as soon as they arrive at the building, they notice that something is really off. The trapped woman attacks one of the policemen and bites him. Before they can really get to grips with the situation, the whole building is sealed off by the health department, locking everyone in. But locking them in with what?
I’m not much of a fan of found footage movies but since [Rec] got some very good buzz, I figured, I’d give this one a try anyway. Unfortunately, [Rec] did not change my opinion about found footage films. Left me cold.
The problem with found footage movies is the form. Of course there are good reasons for shaky cam, for having a lot of shots with only shoes, for the bad lighting etc. But having good reasons for all of that doesn’t make it any easier to watch. Because there are even better reasons for having tripods, and lights and good sound editing.
But I knew what I was getting into there, so I probably shouldn’t complain about it. I mean, technically the movie is very good. The acting is fine, and at least there is a reason for all the shaky cam. [Contrary to most of the action films who just do it out of spite. And maybe budgetary concerns.]
But, apart from a couple of moments, the movie didn’t scare me, it didn’t even interest me a whole lot. In fact, after about 40 minutes I turned it off to take a nap – and I wasn’t even tired when I started the film.
And the ending was just… [SPOILERS] Demonic Possession. Caused by genetics. Spread by a virus. [/SPOILERS] Okeydokey. Whatevs.
Summarising: If you’re into found footage, you might enjoy this. I didn’t.

waaaaas?
[…] that I found extraordinarily gripping to watch – and get scared by. Since Paco Plaza’s [Rec] didn’t work for me, here’s to hoping that he sticks to making more films like […]
