Los cronocrímenes [Timecrimes] (2007)

Los cronocrímenes
Director: Nacho Vigalondo
Writer: Nacho Vigalondo
Cast: Karra Elejalde, Nacho Vigalondo, Candela Fernández, Bárbara Goenaga

Plot:
Héctor (Karra Elejalde) spies a young girl (Bárbara Goenaga) getting undressed in the woods and when his wife (Candela Fernández) conveniently goes out to shop, he decides to investigate. But when he finds the girl, she’s naked an unconscious. Before he can do anything, Héctor is attacked by a mysterious guy in bandages who goes after him. In terror he flees to a weird scientific facility where a young man (Nacho Vigalondo) hides him in a time machine. And so Héctor travels a bit back in time and tries to set things straight.

Even though I saw the first twist coming a very long way off, I really enjoyed this film. It was excellently written, made complete sense (which time travel stories don’t always do) and was really engaging.

I love time travel stories. They are so mind-screwingly brilliant when they’re done right (and so often they’re not). And this movie sometimes makes your brain hurt in a very good way, even though it’s completely logical. And what’s not to love about this?

I didn’t even mind at all that I called the the first plot twist the minute the guy with the bandages showed up [not that that’s a particularly hard twist to figure out]. Since the film is very well structured and the pacing is just right, the tension was still high and I was completely into the story and wanted to see what happened.

The performances were good, as was the soundtrack, even though they couldn’t quite keep up with the script and the general direction.

The low budget really works for this film. That there aren’t many sets and that there’s only a handful of characters really gives the film an intimate feel that makes it that much more affective.

Summarising: Loved it.

“And this movie sometimes makes your brain hurt in a very good way, even though it’s completely logical.” so true!

Hab ihn total genossen.
