Iron Sky
Director: Timo Vuorensola
Writer: Michael Kalesniko
Based on: Johanna Sinisalo‘s story
Cast: Julia Dietze, Götz Otto, Christopher Kirby, Peta Sergeant, Stephanie Paul, Udo Kier
Plot:
In 2018, the President of the United States (Stephanie Paul) sends two men to the moon – a PR measure that’s supposed to ensure her re-election. But upon arrival, the two discover that there are Nazis on the dark side of the moon who have been hiding there since the end of World War 2. James Washington (Christopher Kirby) gets captured, experimented on and finally, Klaus (Götz Otto) the aspiring Führer and Renate (Julia Dietze), scientist and his fiancée return to earth with James to finally retake their home planet.
If you’re not excited by the words “nazis on the moon”, then you probably won’t enjoy this film. But if you, as I did, think that this is THE MOST AWESOME THING, then you’ll love it.
I had really high expectations of this film. I thought the trailer looked impressive, I liked the idea so much and I just expected it to be funfunfun all the way through. And not only did the film fulfill my expectations, it even surpassed them with the special effects: they looked absolutely fanfuckingtastic.
And the script was great. I mean, honestly, subtle it is not. But that doesn’t keep its satire from being spot on. Whether they make fun of PR people, the president of the United States, neo-nazis or the nazis themselves, they had me laughing about it.
The score was brilliant, too. I loved the little nods they included and the song that was playing over the credits was a thing of beauty. Considering that the film didn’t have a lot of budget, it is amazing what they put together in production values in general.
Nevertheless, it’s not a movie to be taken seriously at all. But with that premise, who would do that anyway?
Summarising: B-Movie gold.
