Plot:
Keiko (Rina Takeda) has trained with her father – one of the best sushi chefs ever – all her life, but she was never able to achieve his level. So she ends up as a waitress in a hotel resort, where the heads of a pharmaceutical company go on a short holiday. But disgruntled ex-employee Yamada (Kentarô Shimazu) lives near the resort and when he finds out, he attacks with a genetically modified squid the bite of which turns dead tissue into flesh-eating fighting machines. And so the squid bites the sushi and suddenly the whole hotel is fighting for their lives.
I thought that the premise for this film was absolutely brilliant and I expected to have a lot of fun. Unfortunately the film was pretty mediocre and did not convince me. But at least it was better than Zombie Ass.
I really loved the idea of the sushi biting back for once. And the sushi puppets were pretty damn cool, too – and really funny. And the movie is pretty hyper most of the time, in a very good way.
But inbetween the movie does start to drag and it wouldn’t have hurt if it had been a little shorter. As much fun as that idea is, the film did lack substance.
But I did like Keiko a lot – she was a fun character and her abilities were very well explained (if you accept that making sushi is basically its own martial art) and didn’t come out of nowhere. And the mentoring gardener was pretty cool, too.
There was enough to like in the film – like the bullied egg sushi – but I just expected a bit more from that crazy-ass idea.
Summarising: Okay, but not as good as it could have been.
