Night Of Machinima On Tour: Glitches And Other Horrors In Game-Movies

Night Of Machinima On Tour: Glitches And Other Horrors In Game-Movies was a guided presentation of various Machinima short films by the people of A Maze during the /slash Filmfestival. They centered on glitches that provoke horror, either purposefully or not quite so much on purpose.

I expected a bit more presentation but it was really more of a short film reel with a very few explanatory words inbetween. They had quite a good mix of films, so I didn’t mind watching them at all, but I wouldn’t have minded either if they had talkes a little bit more about it.

I think it’s quite amazing what can be done with those Machinima movies. People who animate that way really have their work cut out for them and it shows that they usually do it out of love.

I especially loved this Silent Hill version, animated in Sims 3, which was totally impressive and also so many levels of meta, it’s even more awesome (making a machinima adaptation of a film adaptation of a video game? hells yes!).

But I’m admittedly not much of a gamer, so I would have appreciated a little more introduction from time to time. He explained at length what a glitch is – which I would have thought was standard knowledge – but then he’d quickly point out what to look for in the next five movies and I’d already forget during the first one what to look for in the other films. That didn’t make things really easy for me.

Though in some cases the glitches were just so terribly obvious, not even I could have missed them. Like here:

But even without knowing what exactly to look for, you could just enjoy the hell out of these films. And not all were based on glitches. Like this hilarious video on how to make the Slenderman a little less scary:

That is just a small collection of what we got served and I had a really wonderful time with it. If they ever come back to Vienna, I’ll gladly see them again.

I’ll leave you with The Hills Have Eggs:

  1. Hey Lena, thanks for the review and the feedback! Just noticed it now. I’ll gladly do some more introductions in the future. I’m sometimes a bit unsure about how much talking is wanted or needed by an unknown audience. Maybe I do a quiz next time ^^

    • Quizzing people would probably be a good idea. ;) If you have an audience consisting of gaming folk, I’m sure your level of introduction would have been enough. But I’m just not very well-versed in that field and would have needed my own tutor.
