Based on the classic Swan Lake, the show give the old tale a new spin: A young prince who has grown tired with his partying lifestyle falls in love with a whore who is being controlled by her pimp through drugs.
Swan Lake Reloaded is a really cool show. The music is awesome, the dancing is pretty great and I thouhgt it was an interesting take on the story.
The thing I loved most about this show was the music. They remixed the classic Tchaikovsky melodies so it would fit the modern dance style and it worked amazingly well. Much like the famous dance scene with the four swans, which they also gave a different twist by having them perform that scene lying down.
They cut the whole thing down to about 90 minutes, which surprised me but it did work out pretty well. I don’t think that I could have taken much more in in one sitting anyway.
I’m not too sure about the whole “turning the princess into a whore” thing – as if there was nothing else a woman could be – but, admittedly, the allegory works really well. And they have the female party guests at the prince’s party dressed up as actual furniture. I’m being generous enough to interpret this as a feminist allegory on the objectification of women, but I’m afraid that you could have also just taken it as the prince being bored with all the women around him, so much so that he sees them as objects, until he meets that “broken woman” he can save/fall in love with.
I also have to admit that the ending remained a bit unclear to me. What exactly happened there? I’m not really sure. It’s not inconceivable that I missed something, but I do believe that they could have been a little clearer.
In any case, I did enjoy the show, the dancing and the colorful stage design. It was fun.
Summarising: Very watchable.
