The Yellow Wallpaper (Charlotte Perkins Gilman)

The Yellow Wallpaper is a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
Finished on: 31.7.2026

Plot:
A young wife, her husband, and their baby move to a mansion in the country where the husband, a physician, hopes to improve the wife’s mental health by ordering her rest in a nursery in the attic of the mansion. But through the wife’s journal, her deteriorating health becomes obvious – except to her husband.

The Yellow Wallpaper has been on my reading list for a while, and when chance struck and let me forget my book at home, I took the chance to finally read it. And it was worth the wait: it is a classic gothic horror story, a feminist critique of patriarchal mental health care, and simply a gripping tale that. It is definitely still relevant today (sadly) – and it made me even more curious about Herland that has been sitting on my bookshelf for years now, too. In short: it was great.

The book cover showing an ornate yellow wallpaper where it is easy to see faces and entire bodies in the design.
