Plot:
Lord (Igor Mirkurbanov) is a famous Russian singer, about to be honored for his life’s work in the Kremlin. The prize is delivered by his friend Robert (Alexei Kravchenko) who is the Minister for Rubber Goods. But their partying finds a quick end when they are contacted by Cheavley, the main rival of Robert’s wife Gertrude. Cheavley has video evidence that Lord and Robert are actually lovers and threatens to expose them. In the world of Russian politics, intrigue and bigotry that cannot stand.

An Ideal Husband is a sometimes haphazard but always enthusiastic amalgamation of various texts that are full of political barbs, irony and sarcasm. While it was a bit long and seeing it in Vienna made it feel a little diluted, I did enjoy most of it.

West Side Story (1961)

West Side Story

Writer: Ernest Lehman
Based on: Jerome Robbins and Arthur Laurents‘ play, which is in turn based on William Shakespeare‘s Romeo and Juliet
Music by: Leonard Bernstein (music), Stephen Sondheim (lyrics)
Cast: Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris

Plot:
Maria (Natalie Wood) has recently come to New York from Puerto Rico to stay with her brother Bernardo (George Chakiris) who has already built his life in the city. Nardo’s life also involves leading a street gang – the Sharks who are the big enemy of the Jets, now led by Riff (Russ Tamblyn), after their former leader Tony (Richard Beymer) quit for a more trouble-free life. But then Maria and Tony meet at a dance and fall for each other immediately. But will their love be enough to bridge the rivalry?

I watched parts of West Side Story way back in school and basically all I could remember about it was the snapping fingers. But of course there is a whole lot more to the film and I’m glad I got to appreciate it in its entirety and even on a big screen.

It was choreographed by Adrienne Canterna and stars James Boyd, Daniela Filippone, Drew Burgess, Robbie Nicholson, Noah Goldsmith, Nicholas Cunningham, Grace Buckley and Jace Zeimantz.

Plot (short version):
The Montagues and the Capulets are feuding. But when Romeo Montague (James Boyd) falls in love with Juliet Capulet (Daniela Filippone) things could work out for the better. Unfortunately, they don’t and it all goes to hell.

To see Romeo and Juliet this way was pretty awesome. Canterna put together a wonderful, touching and above all entertaining show.

Romeo i Dzhulyetta [Romeo and Juliet] (1955) + Vienna Symphony

Romeo i Dzhulyetta is a ballet movie by Lev Arnshtam and Leonid Lavrovsky, based on Shakespeare‘s play and starring Galina Ulanova and Yuri Zhdanov. It was shown in the Konzerthaus with live music by Sergei Prokofiev played by the Vienna Symphony under Frank Strobel as part of ther Film and Music Cylce. [Here’s my review of the other shows in the cycle.]

Plot:
[I think the story is well known, but here the short version.]
The Montagues and the Capulets are feuding. But when Romeo Montague (Yuri Zhdanov) falls in love with Juliet Capulet (Galina Ulanova) things could work out for the better. Unfortunately, they don’t and it all goes to hell.

The movie is very oldfashioned but I liked it: The play was shortened and they took good care to do it in the right places. The dancers were great and Prokofiev’s music is absolutely wonderful.
