I recently saw The Boat That Rocked and while I was mostly disappointed by the film, I really liked the soundtrack (which incidentally, doesn’t feature The Beatles). I thought I’d go for a Top 10: Songs of the 60s edition but quickly figured that I’d have to exclude the Beatles from that (and I’ll probably have to do a seperate list for The Kinks as well). So, this is what I’m doing today: I’m excluding The Beatles by giving them their own list. Because – let’s face it – they’re awesome.
Anyway, this list is not about the sales the singles had (because who cares?) or the quality of the songs (because I’m in no position to judge that), but the songs I personally like best.
And because I had to really, really narrow it down (from about 30 favourite songs to these last eleven [yeah, I know, I cheated again]), I won’t go into the whole “I like this because of this and that”. It would all be the same gushing anyway. Instead I’ll just give you my favourite lines
10. Michelle
I need to, I need to, I need to,
I need to make you see,
Oh what you mean to me,
Until I do I’m hoping you will know what I mean.
9. She Loves You
She said you hurt her so,
She almost lost her mind,
And now she says she knows,
You’re not the hurting kind.
8. And I Love Her
Bright are the stars that shine,
Dark is the sky,
I know this love of mine,
Will never die,
7. Paperback Writer
And I need a job,
So I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.
6. Penny Lane tied with Eleanor Rigby
Penny Lane:
In Penny Lane there is a fireman with an hourglass
And in his pocket is a portrait of the Queen.
He likes to keep his fire engine clean,
It’s a clean machine.
Eleanor Rigby:
Waits at the window, wearing a face that she keeps in a jar by the door,
Who is it for?
5. Can’t Buy Me Love
I’ll give you all I’ve got to give,
If you say you love me too,
I may not have a lot to give,
But what I’ve got I’ll give to you,
4. A Hard Day’s Night
So why on earth should I moan,
‘Cos when I get you alone,
You know I feel okay.
3. Here Comes The Sun
Little darling I feel that ice is slowly melting,
Little darling it seems like years since it’s been clear,
2. Come Together
Got to be good-looking ’cause he’s so hard to see
1. Help!
Help me if you can, I’m feeling down,
And I do appreciate you being around,
Help me get my feet back on the ground,
Won’t you please please help me?
Very nice list – what songs were included in the film, since the Beatles weren’t?
There was a lot of the Kinks, and otherwise a pretty broad mixture of everything 60s. You can see it here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1131729/soundtrack
witzig, ich haette eine komplett andere liste als du. ich glaub du magst mehr die fruehen beatles, oder?
meine nummer eins waere wohl norwegian wood

ps. blackbird <3
pps. die schwierigste liste ever. ich verstehe langsam…
Ja, bin eher bei den frühen Beatles daheim. Aber auch deine Lieder sind alle großartig – es ist echt eine schwere Liste… :)
Personally, I like the slower, melancholy/sad Beatles songs best.
So Eleanor Rigby and Penny Lane would top my list. And While My Guitar Gently Weeps would be up there, too. And…and…and…
It’s really difficult, but oh so enjoyable to ponder ^_^
Exactly. That’s why I do these things. :)
east or west beatles is da bst
