[I know I’m a day late but I had an exam yesterday and I spent the day learning, so..]
We all have them, right? Bands we shouldn’t really like because they’re so uncool and usually not really to our taste anyway, but which still make us smile when they are on. Or we even own CDs which we’ve buried somewhere deep down in our closets. ;)
Okay, it’s not that bad. But you know what I mean , right? Usually it’s some kind of pop music and you’re so above it, culturally. And yet…
So here are my Top 10 Guilty Pop Music Pleasures, ranked by degree of embarassement.
10. The Connells
To be honest, this Guilty Pleasure only extends to ’74-’75. I don’t think I know any other song by them. But I love this song so much, for reasons entirely unkown, that I thought I’d include it here.
I love A-Ha. And not only Take on Me. I own their Hunting High and Low album and I’m afraid I know all the songs pretty much by heart. But a-ha are kind of cool, especially since the literal video version of Take on Me. So that’s why they’re all the way down the list. ;)
[Do you know how excited I am that they have a new album? It’s pathetic.]
8. Phil Collins
Okay, Phil Collins is surely not a bad singer and some of his stuff is pretty cool. But I love even the really embarassing things, like the music he’s written for Tarzan. And I was a little old for Disney Movies when that film came out, so there’s really no excuse…
And just for special kicks: Here’s Phil Collins singing “You’ll Be in My Heart” in German.
You know, George Michael was the reason why I started to watch Eli Stone. [He and Jonny Lee Miller.] And though it’s kind of hard to admit, “Careless Whisper” gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
[By the way, do you know the Limp Bizkit version of Faith?]
And here’s the reason I’m ashamed to admit that I like his music: The video wouldn’t be so bad, except for the appearances of the man himself. First the “dreamily leaned against a wall” part and then the police uniform… oh my…
Okay, here’s another band from Scandinavia. Roxette… I remember when I was twelve or thirteen or something like that I got ahold of one of their CDs and I used to play it all the time, driving everyone around me insane until I had to give the CD back. Since then, they do have a place in my heart.
Here’s Crash! Boom! Bang!, my favourite song by them. And the video is actually pretty cool [though it doesn’t seem to be for this song…].
I promise that this is the last band from Northern Europe. And I don’t think that I have to say much about ABBA anyway, so just enjoy Lay All Your Love on Me.
Cher has an amazingly prolific career and there are some really good songs in it as well. And how couldn’t you love The Shoop Shoop Song?
Uhm, yeah… I can’t really explain that other than with “I like his voice and he’s a really good dancer and I think that his songs aren’t bad.”
What can I say? If there ever was one of his concerts in Vienna, I’d probably be there. Because that’s one hell of a show…
That one, I can explain even less than Justin Timberlake. So I don’t think I will try. I just like her songs.
Backoff! were Austrians attempt at creating a local version of the Backstreet Boys. They had one album and where the one boyband I actually got into, for three weeks or so. Just long enough to buy their CD anyway. And I still think that there songs were not that bad… in a bland, not very unique way anyway.
And so that you can share the glory, I actually uploaded one of their songs. Just don’t expect too much of a video…
