Well, actually the title should probably be: Movies About the Movie Industry. But don’t bother me with details.
I love self-referential things. There’s just an awesome lot of humour to be had [maybe I’ll do Books about Books next]. And it’s also very interesting to see what people do with it. And I love a good mind-screw.
So, here’s my Top 10 of best Movies About Movies and the Movie Industry.
10. Hot Shots
Okay, so this is not really a movie about movies, but strip Hot Shots of its movie references and you’ve got nothing. Therefore I include it in this list. Also as a stand-in for a lot of awesome movie parodies (like Spaceballs or the Naked Cannon). What can I say? Those movies bring out the most infantile humour in me.
9. Last Action Hero
Schwarzenegger in funny movies is usually a painful experience, only relieved by the fond nostalgia of my childhood. But Last Action Hero? Very funny, even without nostalgia.
8. Inland Empire
Until this day, I have no idea what actually happened in this movie. But my mind got screwed alright.
7. Sunset Blvd.
Okay, this one’s not funny. But it’s still very good. Gloria Swanson is absolutely amazing. If the film had nothing else going for itself, it’d still be on this list for her. But fortunately, it also has a good script, good directing and a good overall cast.
6. Be Kind Rewind
SWEDED MOVIES. That’s all I’m going to say.
5. 8 1/2
I have to be honest here, I’ve never seen this movie. But since everybody keeps telling me how great it is, I decided that I had to include it on this list and on a relatively neutral spot. So, yeah, here it is.
4. Shadow of the Vampire
John Malkovich. Willem Dafoe. Eddie Izzard. Nosferatu. F.W. Murnau. Maximilian Schreck. What more do you need?
3. A Cock and Bull Story
This is the adaptation of the novel Tristram Shandy, (one of?) the first self-referential novel ever. And they made a wonderful job of translating it into the movie [well, I imagine that. I haven’t read the book, but the movie is awesome]. And Steve Coogan is amazing.
2. Tropic Thunder
[Oh, Steve Coogan again! And Jack Black again!]
The movie had me at the fake trailers. I laughed so hard I cried. More than once. If you haven’t seen it yet, go right now and do so!

1. Ed Wood
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are an awesome combo. Add to that a crazy story, which happens to be real and a great supporting cast and you’re in for a ride. An awesome one. Gosh, it’s been way too long that I’ve seen this movie. Maybe I’ll watch it now…

Ich glaube, ich habe keinen einzigen von diesen Filmen gesehen… traurig aber wahr…
Außer Blair Witch Project und ich werd jetzt noch seekrank, wenn ich daran denke.
Entourage habe ich die ersten zwei Folgen oder so gesehen und es ist mir nur auf die Nerven gegangen. 30 Rock ist aber super.
entourage… naja, man gewoehnt sich dran, keine ahnung, ich hab drauf vertraut, dass es gut ist, weil HBO (all glory to hbo!!!) und die zweite staffel fand ich dann echt nett. aaaaber. ich hab eh oefter an dich gedacht, gemeinsam haetten wir total abgelaestert, ueber das frauenbild, die klischees, usw… andererseits ist es sehr relitaetsnah, was ich gut finde, wenn auch traurig.

ich hab die wichtigste serie ueberhaupt vergessen: EXTRAS!!! love it.
Hmm… ich glaub, eine schlechte erste season für eine gute zweite steh ich bei Entourage nicht durch… Aber ist ja nicht so als hätt ich nicht genug anzuschauen. ;)
Extras – ich liebe das Konzept und ich mag Ricky Gervais, aber irgendwie kann ich mit diesem Faux-Dokumentationsstil nichts anfangen. Deswegen komm ich auch mit The Office nicht so zurecht.
hast du extras schon probiert?
ich mag the office naemlich nicht so, was ziemlich interessant ist, da die meisten von the office uk schwaermen und sagen, dass office us eine schlechte nachahmung ist. das mag sein, aber ich halte office uk einfach nicht aus, es ist nichtmehr lustig wie oberpeinlich der chef ist, er macht mich nur grantig und wuetend… die erste staffel hab ich mir angeschaut, aber bei der zweiten (und letzten) musste ich schon passen. unertraeglich ist das.
aber extras! extras ist einfach nur witzig. und vielleicht liegts dran, dass ich an filmsachen generell sehr interessiert bin, aber jede folge auf einem anderen set- genial! ich hab mich auf jeden fall sehr amuesiert :) und watch out, momentan bin ich naemlich in der phase, jedem zum geburtstag extras zu schenken… naja, ist ja noch zeit bis zu deinem, vielleicht ists da schon was ganz anderes- csi springfield oder so?
Ich hab eine halbe Folge Extras gesehen. Wahrscheinlich nicht genug, um mir ein echtes Urteil zu bilden, andererseits aber auch nicht genug, dass ich dabeigeblieben bin.
Vielleicht geb ich dem Ganzen noch mal eine Chance.
CSI Springfield ist sicher super. ;)
