Franz Ferdinand were on tour in autumn and the last stop they made before the went home was in Vienna. I went with *. [As support, they brought 1000Robota, a band from Hamburg I don’t know and that we didn’t check out.]
Franz Ferdinand know how to rock a crowd. The atmosphere was great when they started but it got better and better. They played mostly stuff from the new album which I didn’t mind (I like their earlier stuff, too, but at the moment I’m totally in love with the new album). In fact, since their newest album is the most danceable, it was probably a good choice for a concert.
I really liked their light show and video installments. Pretty cool to watch and very fitting.
They ended the concert (before coming back for an encore) with an awesome drum session (a variation on Outsiders) involving all the band members. It was tightly choreographed and sounded absolutely great. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a song that consisted of only drums that much.
When they came back for the encore, everybody was still recovering from this awesomeness. They played Walk Away and Auf Achse, before giving us a LCD Soundsystem cover (All My Friends). The actual end was Lucid Dreams, but in the extended extended version (as a guess, I think the song was 15 minutes long). I have to admit that it got a bit too long for my taste then and I kinda would have prefered if they had ended with the drum session instead because that was certainly the highlight of the evening.
Anyway, If you like them, I can only recommend checking them out live. It’s a party.
