I can’t believe Transformers would get a nomination for anything except a Razzie or ten.

  • District 9
  • An Education
  • The Hurt Locker
  • Inglourious Basterds
  • Precious
  • A Serious Man
  • Up in the Air
  • The Blind Side
  • Up

Alright, what is Up doing in this category? It’s an animated movie, it’s in the animated category, why does it need to be here as well?
Other than that, no surprise appearances (except maybe The Blind Side).

So, here we are. There are a lot of films with multiple nominations, though Avatar didn’t get as many as I had feared. (In fact, The Hurt Locker got as many nominations and that’s at least a little reassuring.)

The Young Victoria managed to get three nominations, which is surprising (though when you look at the categories, it isn’t any more).

Your thoughts?

  1. Okay…I have to think about this a bit more, but here are my initial thoughts:

    1) This award show is going to be soooooo boring.
    2) “Secret of Kells”? Whazzat? If you’re going to throw in a surprise, why not go with “9”?
    3) I actually *like* the fact that “Up” is nominated for “Best Picture”, just on principle, because animated features can be good films and I look at this as a first step towards getting rid of the stupid “Animated” categories. I’m optimistic that way. It would be so much more honest if the Academy just came right out and said “We don’t take these seriously because we don’t get them and think they’re for children.”

    • ad 1: AND THE WINNER IS… AVATAR. Wash, rinse, repeat.

ad 2: 9 actually got quite bad reviews, rather surprisingly. I still want to see it though. And if you’re going with surprises, how about Planet 51?

ad 3: My point is not that Up doesn’t deserve the Best Picture nomination but that it should be either in the Best Picture or in the Best Animated Picture category and not both.
And I do like the extra category because you get more focus on animated movies that way.

      • ad ad 1: Oh Gawd I hope not. Chant with me: ANYTHING BUT AVATAR!!!

ad ad 2: Huh. Really? Alright, fair enough. Will it ever come to A Cinema Near Us?

ad ad 3: You know what would be best? Having it in both, sort of, by introducing other categories as well – Best Drama, Best Comedy/Musical…you could have nominees and a winner in each category and then choose a Best Picture from all the nominees in all the feature-length categories (including documentaries and also foreign films – for which we also need a different procedure, although I haven’t cracked that one, yet).

        • ad 1: I don’t hope so either, but I’m pretty sure that’s what we’re going to end up with.

ad 2: imdb says that it starts in Germany on Feb 25th. Maybe here, too.

ad 3: I’d love to have different categories. Maybe Best Drama, Best Comedy/Musical, Best Genre Movie *g*.

  2. “I can’t believe Transformers would get a nomination for anything except a Razzie or ten.”

To be fair, it’s essentially an Oscar for noise. And if there was one big thing in Transformers 2 (except for Megan Fox’s suckiness) it was NOISE!
