Mika (Support: Zweitfrau)

Mika is a British popsinger. He’s currently on tour with his band; his support in Vienna was Zweitfrau [German], an Austrian pop band.

I didn’t know much about Zweitfrau going into the show. I knew their current single – Clubkultur – and I liked it, though it never motivated me to look at them more closely.

Their show was nice. I doubt that I’m going to become their biggest fan, but their music isn’t bad, especially considering what we usually get as the great next big thing in Austrian music…

Frontwoman Diane Lueger has a lot of energy and is not afraid to use it on stage, which is pretty damn awesome. And the band was pretty well chosen as an introduction to Mika.

Mika (and his band, of course) played a pretty all-encompassing show… I think there were about two or three songs from both his albums that he didn’t play. And the rest absolutely rocked.

I talked about Diane Lueger’s energy on stage, but it’s nothing compared to what Mika delivers. That is pretty dang amazing stuff, you guys.

Apart from Mika himself, the show depends on two things: the animated video sequences that are shown throughout and which really fit the songs and were cool to look at. [deadra said that they were animated by his sister. Props to that!]

And the second thing were actually rather cheap but really effectful gimmicks that were cleverly deployed. During Big Girls, a giant leg was blown up on stage. During We Are Golden, a glitter cannon went off, showering the audience in golden, well, glitter, which looked wonderful. And during two songs, people in really colourful costumes showed up which looked like they came straight out of one of the animations.

The surprising thing is that it all works perfectly together and you’ll leave the concert with a huge grin on your face.

So, if you’re ever really down, you can only hope that there’s a Mika concert on. If not, you can do the next best thing which is to listen to his songs at home, turned up really loudly, sing along and dance. [Maybe you can look at a picture of his while you do it because he’s really cute and that always helps.]
