A Single Man is the first movie by Tom Ford, based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood and starring Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode, Nicholas Hoult and (in a mini-role) Lee Pace.
Plot:
George (Colin Firth) has a good life He has a nice house in a good neighbourhood and a work he loves. But ever since his boyfriend of many years, Jim (Matthew Goode), died, it all started to feel empty to him.
The movie shows one day in George’s life as he tries to cope.
A Single Man was great, totally deserving of the accolades it’s gotten. It’s a very aesthetic movie, wonderfully shot and very well acted. I wasn’t surprised how the plot developped but it was just beautiful to watch it unfold.
Colin Firth really was brilliant. As was Julianne Moore (and that woman is even beautiful when she plays an alcoholic past her prime). That Nicholas Hoult grew up to be a good-looking young man is pretty surprising. You really can never tell with kids…
Tom Ford seriously impressed me. The movie is very well done and especially well done for a first time film-maker. The way he uses colour and the lack of colour is brilliant and the movie is generally a wonder to look at.
And the soundtrack by Abel Korzeniowski is really nice, too.
The only thing I found rather annoying were the accents. I mean, pretty much the entire cast is English (except Julianne Moore and Lee Pace). The film takes place in the US and except for Colin Firth and again Julianne Moore everyone is supposed to be American. But except for Julianne Moore again (who sounds perfectly British) and Colin Firth and Lee Pace (who don’t have to don a different accent) nobody sounds even remotely like they’re supposed to. Especially not Matthew Goode.
It wasn’t the worst thing in the world, but it was irritating.
And of course, how you can cast Lee Pace and then use him in only one scene and not even have him make out with anybody in that one scene is beyond me.
Summarising: If you like your movies calm and beautiful, A Single Man was made for you.

Colin Firth ist einer von den Männern, die in jungen Jahren deutlich netter aussehen als im Alter. (Natürlich kann er trotzdem gut schauspielen.)
PS: I don’t like mymovies calm and beautiful. Not at all. :P
Maybe in one of your softer moments, you’d enjoy a couple of minutes of this film. :P
Du hast recht was Colin Firth betrifft. Wobei er immer noch recht weit davon entfernt ist, schlecht auszusehen.
^^ Da hast du natürlich Recht. (mit beidem, Colin Firths imme rnoch ok-Aussehen und mit meinem soft moment.)
