Jack Frost (1997)

Jack Frost is a horror movie directed by Michael Cooney and starring Scott MacDonald and Christopher Allport. [Not to be confused with the 1998-Michael-Keaton-family-kitschfest.]

Plot:
Jack Frost (Scott MacDonald) is a serial killer on his way to death row, when the transporter he’s in gets into an accident close to the town where he was finally captured by the local Sheriff Sam (Christopher Allport) in the first place. Jack sees his opportunity to escape, but before he can actually do that, he gets sprayed with a chemical that turns him into a snowman – a snowman on a killing spree.

Oh people, the things you discover when you read Topless Robot comments… It’s wonderful! Jack Frost is an amazing piece of comedy that is only made better by it’s crappiness.

Practically everything Jack Frost ever says are cheesy oneliners, about as funny by themselves as Mr Freeze’s in Batman & Robin. But in the sheer density and with the over the top delivery of Scott MacDonald they cross from funny to unfunny and back again and end up firmly in the realm of awesome.

And the whole movie is like that. It’s not good by any stretch of the imagination. But it’s absolutely brilliant in its unabashed and unashamed silliness.

There’s a bit of gore, but the special effects are rather bad in general, so it never actually looks real. The cast is about as convincing as the special effects are.

The script – which knows exactly what it’s doing – would have deserved a little higher production values. But most likely, better quality would have worked against it anyway.

Summarising: Jack Frost is the best movie it can be and a must-see for fans of crappy movies.
