Something Borrowed is the adaptation of Emily Giffin‘s book, directed by Luke Greenfield, written by Jennie Snyder and starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson, Colin Egglesfield and John Krasinski.
Plot:
Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Darcy (Kate Hudson) have been best friends since about forever. Darcy is an extroverted party girl, while Rachel is pretty comfortable in Darcy’s shadow. But after a drunken night Rachel sleeps with Darcy’s fiancé Dex (Colin Egglesfield) who she’s been in love with since about forever. What starts as a single mistake soon ends up an affair that puts most of Rachel’s values in question.
Something Borrowed is quite the chick flick – one that doesn’t insult your intelligence, has a nice sense of humor and good characters. It’s also a film that follows real-world-relationship knowledge and not Hollywood-relationship logic, which is always great.
As sad as it is, a movie made for women which doesn’t assume that its audience is a bit stupid is a rare animal. That’s why it’s so nice to discover that this film is one of them: There are actual adults in this film. Talking about things with each other. Rationally. My heart is still all a-flutter when I think about it.
What also makes my heart flutter is John Krasinski. Is there a more likeable guy? Like, ever? No matter where he turns up, he makes me happy. He’s also a talented actor, which is another point in his favor.
Ginnifer Goodwin was a good fit for her role, as was Kate Hudson. They have good chemistry with each other and you understand how and why their friendship works. It’s also their friendship that is at the heart of the film.
Colin Egglesfield looks eerily like Tom Cruise which is about all I can say about him.
The script was nice. The dialogue felt very real and it had a good sense of humor. While it’s not something people will be quoting at each other for the next five years, it works and it works well.
Summarising: Very nice entertainment. Made me want to check out Emily Giffin’s books, too.
