The Five-Year Engagement
Director: Nicholas Stoller
Writer: Jason Segel, Nicholas Stoller
Cast: Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Rhys Ifans, Lauren Weedman, Mimi Kennedy, David Paymer, Jacki Weaver, Jim Piddock, Brian Posehn
Plot:
Tom (Jason Segel) and Violet (Emily Blunt) are a very happy couple. Especially when Tom proposes, everything seems perfect. But before they can actually get married, life pretty much gets in the way of things. So they postpone the wedding and move to Detroit, where Violet got a job. And then they keep on postponing the wedding. But will there ever be the perfect time to get married?
I didn’t expect very much from this film – just a nice, shallow RomCom. But the movie was so incredibly funny, it not only had me laughing out loud, it actually had me in stitches on several occasions. Respect.
This movie has two main strengths: absolutely charming and at the same time completely realistic characters and impeccable comedic timing that makes event the weaker jokes work with apparent ease.
Though the script is good enough that it doesn’t have too many weak jokes. And I loved the idea behind the story and the way the story was romantic but without too much kitsch and still with a sense of realism about it. They just really found the perfect balance there.
The cast was great, too. Not only Jason Segel and Emily Blunt who both seem so incredibly nice that I just really would like to sit down and have a chat with them. But also Chris Pratt and Alison Brie who I love on the big screen as much as on TV. But most of all Rhys Ifans was absolutely funny (and I didn’t even know that he was in this film – Surprise!RhysIfans is even better than normal Rhys Ifans).
And to round it all off, the soundtrack is fun, too. The film’s just a complete entertainment package.
Summarising: Might not be the film of the year, but if you want a good laugh, it’s damn perfect.
