Plot:
Tree (Jessica Rothe) thought that she left time loops behind and is happy dating Carter (Israel Broussard) and just being a normal college student. But then Carter’s roommate Ryan (Phi Vu) gets stuck in a time loop and asks for their help. They realize that Ryan’s science experiments may have been the root of it all, and they have to figure out a way to get out of the loop and stop it from happening again.
Happy Death Day 2U is a really excellent sequel – I’m very impressed that they not only made it make sense that there would be a second time loop (you know, as far as those things make sense in the first place), but also that they managed to keep the overall entertainment level of the first film.
Sequels are often a disappointment, so it was nice to get one that nails it as much as Happy Death Day 2U. And I was generally happy to get such a fun and entertaining film that had me laughing out loud (the death montage alone was absolutely hilarious).
Jessica Rothe is fantastic again and won me over even more than she already did in the first film. Also, I’m here for Tree and Carter 4EVA! Here and ready to break out the full shipping materials. They are just supercute together. The film generally does its work so that you connect easily with the characters and actually have a stake in how they’re doing amid all the – often rather silly – fun.
Given the overall fun tone of the film, I was a little taken aback by the open and rather harsh ending in the after credits scene. I was reminded of how a time loop is actually a prison in Thursday Next and I didn’t think the character deserved that kind of punishment, even if they aren’t the greatest person for sure.
But other than that, I absolutely loved and enjoyed this second outing of Tree and her friends – I’d be here for more, should they decide to make more.
Summarizing: A whole lot of fun.
