Plot:
Now that Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) has taken over Jigsaw’s mantle, he organizes a trap for William Easton (Peter Outerbridge), CEO of insurance company Umbrella Health. But Hoffman isn’t actually in the clear yet, as the FBI and agent Erickson (Mark Rolston) are closing in on him, despite his framing of Agent Strahm. Meanwhile Jigsaw’s ex-wife Jill (Betsy Russell) acts on the inheritance she got from him.
I have to say that I am growing increasingly annoyed with this series, and it’s not like I was a huge fan of it to begin with. I am underwhelmed, overall, also with this film, although it is a little better than other entries in the series.
I’ve said it before, I will say it again, I just don’t give a shit about Jigsaw himself. But I give even less of a shit about Hoffman who is a less charismatic successor than I would have hoped. Plus, the trouble he creates at the police station is some of the most ridiculous, illogical fuckery I have ever seen. It left me with my jaw hanging open.
At least, the main trap in this film kind of makes sense. There is a clear lesson that is being taught to William: he is responsible for lives, even if his company position keeps him very far removed from that truth. That being said, the film gives us the flattest criticism of the USAmerican private insurance system ever. But even more egregiously, one really has to wonder how many people have to die to teach a rich white man a lesson? Obviously quite a few in Jigsaw’s opinion, rendering his entire „life is precious and not to be wasted“ shtick as absurd as ever.
To be fair, there are some traps here that show more creativity than the films before it had to offer and I do generally appreciate that there is an attempt at a political statement in this one. That is more than many of the other films had to offer. But it isn’t really enough to make this a good film. Just a better Saw film than others.
Summarizing: Maybe watching all of them basically at once was a really bad idea.
