Angels’ Pawn is a novella and the first thing to be released in Nalini Singh‘s new Guild Hunter Series. The next one will be Angels’ Blood, the first book which comes out next week. Again, these stories are in a paranormal setting, but it has nothing to do with the world Nalini Singh created for the Psy-Changeling Series.
Ashwini is a hunter for the Guild. The Guild is kind of the Human enforcer unit between the Angels and the Vampires (who are created by the Angels). Ashwini hunts renegade vampires, or vampires who have simply offended an angel. One of the vampires she had to hunt a couple of times (and always in the last time, her order would be retracted) is Janvier, a sexy Cajun.
When Ashwini is called on a mission to retrieve a kidnapped vampire, she calls on Janvier and his contacts to help her. But why he agrees to do it, she doesn’t know.
Again, Nalini Singh has created a compelling world and I have a feeling that it’s going to grow more complex with every addition to the series. Although I can’t say I know how it works exactly after reading this novella, this just makes me want to pick up Angels’ Blood even more. [Fear not! ‘Tis already ordered!]
Apparently Ashwini and Janvier feature only very shortly in Angels’ Blood, which I found sad because their story definitely isn’t finished yet. But maybe they’ll come back later.
I hesitate to call this novella a romance. Unlike the Psy-Changeling Series, which clearly is, Ashwini and Janvier’s relationship wasn’t really romantic. I mean, yes, there was sexual tension and their relationship is definitely interesting and a main focus, but it’s not really romantic as such.
Don’t know how to explain it better.
Anyway, Nalini Singh again proves her great strength of building interesting, complex and sensible worlds with characters you want to know more about. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more of the Guild Hunters.
